Experts in the human resources sector are warning of an imminent decline in available and strong employees, and this is calling for employers to appreciate and retain the ones they already have through leadership training . This is because there are fewer young people entering the work force, and the older ones currently available will be retiring soon or will want to reduce their working hours sooner than later.
Sometimes employers need to terminate employees for various reasons, and this is always costly on their part. Apparently, the cost of replacing an employee stands at about 50% of their yearly income, which is very expensive. On the other hand, the same studies indicate that one way to get employees do a better job is to offer them ongoing training and leadership.
It is clear that employees want to perform better in their jobs. However, this is not always obvious to their leaders. On the other hand, it is rare that an employee will want to sabotage their employer. Retaining staff requires a lot of effort from the employer, who must do their best to keep the current workforce motivated and one way to do this is through continuous training.
Studies clearly indicate that about 30 – 60 % of the current work force is looking for work consistently. Hence, each employer must look for ways to retain them and avert the training loses they would incur if they had to train other people in replacement. They must make the employees feel appreciated which will make them less likely to quit.
You can prevent your best staff from leaving through various ways, and one of the ways is ensuring that they comply with upcoming job changes. For example, if you begin using new software, ensure all the workers who need to use it are familiar with it. You can provide training along with manuals.
Ensure that they understand expected deadlines, performance numbers and the expected quality of finished products, more so, if there have been any recent changes. Help them understand why they have to do things differently from way they are accustomed to, and make them feel a part of a larger team and highly appreciated. Look out for ways to show gratitude, which is a clear indication of good leadership even if what the individual did, is a part of their duty, appreciate them.
